WALA/Dr. Hauschka biodynamic medicinal plant gardens
The ingredients of Dr. Hauschka skin care and make-up are mainly of plant origin. Glycerol, stearic acid or other fatty ingredients are also obtained only from plant materials.
However, for some Dr. Hauschka products ingredients of animal origin are used. Among other ingredients originating from animals are beeswax, lactose, propolis, honey, royal jelly, silk powder, lanolin and carmine as a colouring agent in our make-up. Accordingly, not all Dr. Hauschka products are vegan.

In most of our face care products bee products are used. For that reason the variety of vegan face care products is not that large. Bee products are important ingredients, which have not only skin caring properties, they are also able to moisturise the skin and protect it against external influences. Bee products are very skin-compatible and have important galenic properties. As an example, to gain an intensive face cream it is necessary to use ingredients which support the consistency of the cream. For the natural cosmetic sector beeswax provides the best properties.
Plant waxes gained from candelilla or carnauba are often mentioned as an alternative plant wax. Generally the substances are nearly the same, but they provide different skin-properties. The wax from candelilla or carnauba has a much higher melting point and has a harder texture than beeswax. Therefore the plant waxes provide a different care effect for the skin. From an anthroposophic point of view beeswax shows an unique warmth quality and more vitality as a plant wax due to its animal-derived origin.
Since we have consciously decided to use animal-derived ingredients where it makes sense for the skin, it is of particular importance to us to treat the animals in a responsible way and secure a species-appropriate keeping. Therefore, for example, we use solely regional organic beeswax sourced from ecological beekeeping based on the strict requirements of controlled organic beekeeping.
Furthermore we have had beehives in the WALA medicinal plant garden for many decades. Our garden is cultivated biodynamic following Demeter regulations. Bees with all their species are very important as pollinators and play an indispensable role in ecosystems.
What is Vegan Skin Care?
By definition, skin care can be labelled as vegan, if it does not contain any animal derivatives. This however, does not guarantee that the product is 100% natural, or ethically produced. For example 100% synthetic chemical, artificial, mineral-oil-based products can also be vegan, which sounds better than 100% synthetic chemical.

Our products are not always vegan, as they deliberately use ingredients from all kingdoms of nature. Our focus is on producing the highest quality, 100% natural skin care that is as kind to the planet as it is to your skin.
Our sourcing
At our own Demeter certified (biodynamic) medicinal plant gardens, and our farm and fields nearby, which are also Demeter certified, we interact humanely, sustainably and responsibly with our environment and our fellow beings. All raw ingredients that we do not produce ourselves, we obtain from cultivation partnership projects which comply with our strict NATRUE certified standards.
Naturally we do not perform or commission any animal experiments for our products. This has been the case since we were first established 56 years ago.
