Your A, C and E Edit

Acerola cherry - Fruit: vitamin C, vitamin B6, provitamin A as well as iron, calcium, magnesium, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin.

Recently we asked our Australian Esthetician Trainer, Melanie, about the A, C and Es of skin care. You may want to grab a cuppa for a bit of a read.

Dr. Hauschka uses whole botanical extracts rather than isolated, or synthetic chemical vitamins, why is that better for your skin?

“It’s no different from eating healthy and nutritious food. When we eat an orange you’re not just getting vitamin C, it’s also a good source of fibre, and contains other nutrients such as folate, calcium, potassium, and thiamine (vitamin B1). Feed your skin naturally, because your skin understands and assimilates whole natural and organic ingredients.”

Wild carrot - provitamin A (carotene), vitamin B1, B2 and C, flavonoids, essential oil.

What are your thoughts on whole A, C and E - the skin healers and antioxidant vitamins?

“Dr. Hauschka formulations are complex. One violin doesn't make an orchestra. Without going into too much detail each formulation’s ingredients are there for the care of your skin, not for the formulation itself. That’s why you won’t find synthetic chemical preservatives, colours, silicones (which are occlusive to the skin by the way) or fillers. It’s also why I think Dr. Hauschka is good value for money.

When composing our formulations we subscribe to the 'three-fold nature of humans, plants and skin'. It’s interesting to have an understanding of how this relates to the development of product formulations and why it makes Dr. Hauschka products so effective. It means each layer of your skin has the botanical extract that corresponds within the formula. Vitamins are in their whole form as part of a complete formulation suited to a particular skin condition.

Back to vitamins. We often use wild carrot extract and this is a rich source of provitamin A. It also gives the product formula a natural orange colour. Think about the deep orange colour of Clarifying Day Oil, the warm colour of Revitalising Day Lotion - that’s thanks to wild carrot. Provitamin A promotes natural moisturising, which means it helps to hydrate the skin effectively, giving it a radiant glow. It assists in promoting and maintaining a healthy dermis and epidermis; the top two layers of your skin.

Clarifying Day Oil is to regulate an oily skin on its own, however, you can also mix it with your usual moisturiser when it behaves more like an oil serum, to deliver those ingredients to your skin should you wish. My bathroom feels like an apothecary when I’m blending products, and a beautiful blend for the cooler months is Rose Day Cream mixed with a couple of drops Clarifying Day Oil. Super nourishing and protective and it includes vitamins A, C and E but so much more than just the vitamins.

Vitamin C is found in rosehip extract and also Regenerating range’s acerola cherry extract. Acerola whole extract contains not just high vitamin C, you’re also getting vitamin B6, provitamin A, magnesium, iron, calcium and niacin. Again, hence the importance of using the whole plant. Vitamin C is important for antioxidant, skin-protecting and fortifying properties and to stimulate collagen production in your skin. It also helps against fine lines and brightens your complexion.

Vitamin E is in plant oils, particularly rich in wheat germ oil. The fat-soluble properties of vitamin E means rapid absorption into the skin. It helps the skin lock in moisture and promotes the production of collagen, it also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties."

Raspberry - Leaves: tannins. Fruit: fruit acids, B-complex vitamins, provitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium. Seeds: approx. 22–25% oil. Seed oil: high unsaturated fatty acid content, linoleic acid (47–63%), linolenic acid (25–40%), vitamin E, carotenoids.

The world of skin care products is confusing, people often say they are overwhelmed with choices, do you have any thoughts on this?

“Yes, I think it’s really important to read ingredients, look for 100% natural ingredients for your skin and ignore the marketing hype.

We're always happy to answer any questions, just email feedback@helioshealth.com.au, also keep an eye on our In Store Events for a one on one consultation with our Team’s Skin Care Experts and Make-up Artists, with years of experience. You will be provided with the optimum product prescription and recommendations for your skin care rituals.

Be aware your skin may need different care seasonally. Actually even week and weekend environments may be so different, keep that in mind. For example you may be using Regenerating products during the week but perhaps in the weekend you’re out in all sorts of weather watching kids play sports or whatever, if that’s the case, maybe a more protective weekend moisturiser would be a better choice, such as Rose Day Cream

I also recommend to visit our Online Skin Advisor. Just answer 8 questions, should take you around 3 minutes, and you will automatically received your morning and evening product recommendations."

Thank you Melanie!
