Cleansers - let's take a closer look at the ingredients

  • Ingredients matter and quality natural and organic ingredients matter for your skin.

  • Your skin is semi-permeable and therefore absorbs.

  • It’s important to read a product’s fully disclosed ingredients list.

Every ingredient in the formulations of Dr. Hauschka skin care products are there for the benefit of your skin, not for the formula itself. There are no fillers and no synthetic chemical ingredients, this is why our products are concentrated care and that’s why they also represent value for money.

Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients in our cleansers:

Cleansing Cream ingredients:

Sweet Almond Meal – finely ground almonds bind particularly well with dirt and the skin’s overnight eliminations giving a deep yet gentle morning cleanse.

Calendula – An important herb, calendula is high in carotenes, flavonoids, mucilage, saponins, tannins and essential oils. The sun-like pot marigold has soothing, astringent, and regenerating properties.

Anthyllis – one of our key botanical ingredients, extensively studied by Elisabeth Sigmund, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka. Anthyllis, aka Woundwort helps bring any skin condition to a state of strength and balance.

Peanut Oil – pharmaceutical grade peanut oil is used as an extracting medium for many plants. It has neutral qualities that do not interfere with the herb’s active constituents. It’s a very stable oil, requiring no additional antioxidants. Our peanut oil is steam treated and filtered to remove the proteins related to peanut allergies and has been tested and certified as aflatoxin-free.

Chamomile – benefits delicate and sensitive skin because of its skin-soothing properties. German Chamomile essential oil is a deep blue colour due to the constituent chamazulene, which gives it powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and supports the body’s response to irritation by clearing heat.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum) – soothing and calming to the skin. It is often used in cosmetics for skin that is extremely sensitive or irritated. In topical use, the oil does not make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Sunflower Seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil – nourishing.

Witch Hazel – leaf and bark is rich in tannins that have toning and fortifying effects on the skin.

Wheat Germ Oil – gluten free and a rich source of Vitamin E.

Fragrance – we only use natural and organic essential oils, we do not use cheap synthetic chemical perfumes.

Barbados Cherry Fruit – Acerola, also known as the West Indian cherry, is a native of the Mexican Yucatan peninsula. Its red, cherry-like fruits are rich in Vitamin C, 60x more than citrus fruits. Extracts of acerola are used for their antioxidant, skin-protecting and fortifying properties.

Xanthan Gum – produced from sugar syrup by a natural yeast-like microorganism. A complex carbohydrate (polysaccharide) which is used as a thickening agent. It’s a moist gel which feels pleasant on the skin.

Lecithin – from soy beans (tested and certified Non-GMO) bind the oil and water components in creams, acting as a natural emulsifier. It has a smoothing and moisturising effect on the skin.

Algin – a gel forming substance obtained from seaweed. Thickens and stabilises creams and keeps the skin supple.

Soothing Cleansing Milk ingredients:

Alcohol – food grade ethyl alcohol (ethanol) from organically grown wheat that is fermented and distilled and is gluten-free. Many plants are extracted in alcohol because it extracts the widest variety of plant constituents. Alcohol also serves as a natural emulsifier, preservative and carrier, helping ingredients penetrate the skin. Alcohol is not drying to the skin when part of a carefully formulated Dr. Hauschka composition.

Anthyllis – one of our key ingredients, extensively studied by Elisabeth Sigmund, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka. Anthyllis, (aka Woundwort) guides all skin conditions to a state of strength and balance.

Jojoba Seed Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) – A very stable wax derived from the fruit (seeds) of jojoba. The wax, which is liquid at room temperature, contains beta carotene and tocopherols. Jojoba oil is highly valued for its moisturising and emollient (skin softening) effects. It protects your skin from dryness with a ‘breathable’ or non-occlusive, non-sticky, non-greasy film. It also smoothes and fortifies the epidermis.

Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis) – Cold pressed from the edible nut kernels (fruit) of the almond tree, sweet almond oil is an excellent skin-softening (emollient) oil historically used for centuries in skin care. It is mild, lightweight and easily absorbed into the skin as well as rich in unsaturated fats and essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid. It has a calming and soothing effect especially for dry, itchy skin and supports the skin’s barrier function.

Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus Armeniaca) – obtained from the seeds of apricot fruits by cold pressing and filtration. Lightweight, nurturing, and easily absorbed by the skin, apricot kernel oil is high in vitamins A and E and essential fatty acids. Especially soothing for sensitive, dry or sunburned skin, it helps to replenish the skin and maintain a healthy moisture balance. Similar to sweet almond oil in characteristics and scent, it is excellent for making oil extractions of plants.

Glycerin – also known as glycerol, a sugar alcohol and a building block of triglyceride fats and oils. Only plant-derived glycerin is used for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care products. It helps preserve the skin’s moisture.

Fermented Grain Extract – Sourdough bread made of freshly milled oats, wheat and rye is subjected to a second fermentation process, in which naturally occurring lactic acid probiotics transform the bread into a highly nutritive substance. The liquid portion that results is called Brottrunk which, literally means “bread drink”– a traditional European health drink. The remaining solid portion, rich in proteins, calcium, iron, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, E, and co-enzyme A, is used to make fermented grain extract. It contains natural ferments that help protect the skin’s acid mantle and have humectant and soothing properties. Fermented grain extract also helps break down impurities while bringing moisture and vitality to the skin. Fermented grain extract contains gluten.

Cetearyl Alcohol – a fatty alcohol derived from plant oils that has a firm, white, wax-like appearance with emulsifying properties. Helps bind the components of creams, hydrate the skin and make it soft and supple.

Bentonite – A white clay of volcanic origin found primarily in the USA, it is a natural clay mineral that can store large amounts of water, allowing it to stabilise emulsions. A thickener and emulsifier, in makeup, it absorbs oil and reduces shine. It has a cooling feel since water evaporates quickly from clay.

Lecithin – from soy beans (tested and certified Non-GMO) bind the oil and water components in creams, acting as a natural emulsifier. It has a smoothing and moisturising effect on the skin. Lecithin is a component of all of the body’s cell membranes, helping to form and stabilise them.

Xanthan Gum – produced from sugar syrup by a natural yeast-like microorganism, Xanthomonas campestris. A complex cardohydrate (polysaccharide) which is used as a thickening agent. It covers the skin as a soft, moist gel which feels pleasant on the skin.

Hydrolysed Wheat Protein – protein that has been broken down by hydrolysis into smaller proteins and amino acids. It adds a slippery feel to a product, provides emollient, skin softening actions and serves as a consistency regulator. Hydrolysed wheat protein contains gluten.

Fragrance – we only use natural and organic essential oils, we do not use cheap synthetic chemical perfumes, and we have our very own in-house Perfumer, Jörg Zimmermann.
