Are you cool, warm or neutral?

What's your skin undertone - cool, warm or neutral?

Our guide to determine which colours suit you best

We have spoken to our resident Make-up Artist, Tania to get some make up tips and tricks to finding the best natural make-up for you online, including DIY skin undertone tests, and she even shared some make-up tutorials.

Firstly, we asked Tania, how to find your perfect match Foundation and in general which colours, such as lipstick, eyeshadows and blush are the best choices for individual skin tones.

1) It’s so annoying trying to find the right colour foundation, when it looks fine in store, then doesn’t work at all in daylight. Do you have any advice around this?

Yes, best practice is to place 3 colours of Foundation that you think will be about right on your chin. Your chin, not your cheek, because you can see clearly on your chin. Then blend each out a little and downwards onto your neck. In natural daylight check and choose which one best blends with your chin and neck. That’s the right one for you.

2) What about skin undertones - cool, warm and neutral?

Yes, this is really useful to know, and helps you to choose your best foundation colours.

A cool undertone skin suits silver jewellery best, a warm undertone skin suits gold jewellery best, neutral undertone suit both gold and silver. Another check is if white suits you best you have a cool undertone, whereas if off-white or creams suit you best then you have a warm undertone. And you guessed it, if you suit both whites and creams then you have a neutral undertone. Look for pinks in the skin for cool, more of a yellow for warm undertones.

3) So when you understand which undertone you have how does that help when choosing Foundation?

Often you will see in a Foundation description whether it’s best suited to a cool or warm undertone. For instance Dr. Hauschka Foundation 03 chestnut is for a cool beige undertone, whereas Foundation 02 almond is for a warm undertone. This makes choosing the right colour Foundation easier.

Dr. Hauschka Foundation

001 Cashew - neutral skin tone, very fair
002 Pine - cool skin tone, very fair
01 Macadamia – neutral skin tone, fair, or maybe used as a ‘primer’
02 Almond – warm skin tone, light to medium
03 Chestnut – cool skin tone, medium
04 Hazelnut – warm skin tone, medium to light dark
05 Nutmeg – neutral skin tone, medium to light dark
06 Walnut – warm skin tone, medium dark

4) Ok, what about blush?

Good point, mainly because, if you don’t add the colour back in, you end up with a very one dimensional look. Think of children and their youthful rosy cheeks. Even when I do make-up on people who have dilated capillaries and redness on their cheeks, sure I will conceal that with Colour Correcting Powder 00 translucent or 02 calming which I apply under Foundation by the way, but I always add the colour back in with Blush to create those rosy cheeks. Usually I also apply a little Highlighter 01 on cheekbones too.

Blush is really easy to choose as 01 raspberry suits cool undertones and 02 apricot suits warm undertones.

I will also add that our Bronzing Powder is matte and the colour suits every single person I’ve used it on. It’s definitely the best Bronzing Powder I have ever used, and in general a favourite of Make-up Artists.
